THANK YOU for making our last auction  a great success! It was in support of a very special cause...Proceeds from the auction will benefit The Exceller Fund's Golden Years Fund to honor the memory of Almata, an Exceller daughter who recently passed from the infirmities of old age. The Golden Years Fund created in honor of the son of Secretariat, Verifiable, and supports geriatric horses past their prime and often forgotten.  Verifiable was 27 years old, in a bad situation, and The Exceller Fund was asked to help. Verifiable will remain in The Exceller Fund program for the rest of his years.  Since The Exceller Fund offers a lifetime commitment to horses that come into their program, they realize the dedication and specialized care geriatric horses require in terms of time, effort, and money.  Therefore, they created this special fund specifically for their older residents. This auction includes photographs donated on behalf of Almata.

Our last auction in March for Bright Futures Farm, and Dreaming of Three's "Extreme Retired Racehorse Makeover," raised $800! Look soon for our Anuual Equine ARtwork Auction in May!

In 2013, we're aiming for over $10,000, to better help equines in need!

And here is another way you can help - by requesting a Custom Haiku from Ted PeepLover for a donation to Special Horses. You request the theme, and Ted delivers a multi stanza Haiku. Your options range from simply posting it on someone's facebook page, to having it printed out on a suitable background, or to having it printed and framed, with a custom frame made by Charissa Vallejo's beasties - so it's an all equine effort (or canine or feline, since they help make frames as well!). Charissa runs GoodKharmaReThreads! Simply contact wendin@specialhorses.org! See the example, custom made for Cheri Vaughn, who was the high bidder for a Custom Haiku in the October Trash or Treasure Auction.

“Extreme Retired Racehorse Makeover”

NEGLEY, OHIO — Barrel racer, Jackie Harris, founder of the non-profit organization, Dreaming of Three, always had a dream of having a barrel race for rescued horses in order to save their lives and to give them a second chance.  After mentioning this idea to many in the equine community, she received much support and excitement from Thoroughbred professionals and also barrel racing professionals. This event will consist of two segments, a judged free style portion and a timed barrel race. It will be held on August 2, 2013 at 8:00 p.m. at the Simmons Equestrian Center in Negley, Ohio.  Twelve Off The Track Thoroughbreds (OTTB) and 12 selected trainers will be the center of this event.  The twelve trainers will be selected from applications taken from now until March 1 and will be selected based on experience, references and facility approval.  They will have 100 days to train their OTTB.  During these 100 days, Dreaming of Three will follow their progress via blogs, social media, and the Dreaming of Three website. The funds from the Event this year will benefit CANTER and Bright Futures Farm in Sarver, PA.

A HUGE PLEA TO HELP TIER!

A HUGE PLEA FOR HELP - for TRUE INNOCENTS EQUINE RESCUE IN RIVERSIDE CALIFORNIA - please see the video:
- PLEASE GO TO www.tierrescue.org for details on how you can help!

Requesting that you help TIER in this very specific way: contact ABC7 and ask them to do a follow up on TIER (link to original video)

Duncan's story - the inhumanity to equines

Warning - graphic photos. TIER was contacted about a horse with an eye issue, and TIER agreed to try and help. They brought him to the vet, where they were told that the horse had a squamous cell carcinoma that had gone unchecked for at least a year. Duncan was abandoned with a fly mask on. Gail from TIER said Duncan's temperment was simply wonderful - he was a big (16 hand), 10 year old, sweet and easy going. It is inconceivable that any responsible owner could be so cruel.

Opie Memorial Wall

If you would like to have a horse's name inscribed on a brick in the Opie Memorial Wall, please send a jpeg of the horse, and a brief biography (250 words) to wendin@specialhorses.org. We ask that you make a donation in memory of the horse; these funds will be used to help our participating groups. Others can donate in your horse's memory as well (simply note the name of the horse on the donation). An acknowledgment of your gift will be sent via e mail with the link to your horse's page on the Memorial Wall.
